Returning to College? Here's How to Get Started Again

Been away from college for a while? You’re not alone—and coming back may be easier than you think.

Maybe life got busy. Maybe work, family, finances, or other responsibilities put college on pause. Or maybe you simply needed some time away to figure out what you wanted next.

Now you’re thinking about returning to Lemoore College, but you’re not sure where to begin. You may be wondering: Do I need to apply again? Will my old classes still count? What classes should I take? How do I register?

The good news is that you don’t have to figure it all out by yourself. Lemoore College has resources specifically designed to help returning students get back on track.

First, Find Out What You Need to Do to Re-Enroll

Your first step depends on how long it has been since you attended Lemoore College or Coalinga College.

Lemoore College considers students who last attended within the past two primary terms (Fall/Spring) returning students. If it has been more than two terms, you may need to reapply through the college's admissions process.

If you’re unsure which situation applies to you, don’t worry. The Lemoore College Returning Students page can help you determine your next step.

Step 1: Reconnect With Your College Goals

Before registering for classes, take a moment to think about what you want from college this time around.

Your goal may be the same as when you first attended—or it may have completely changed.

Ask yourself:

  • Am I working toward a degree or certificate?
  • Do I want to transfer to a four-year university?
  • Am I returning to prepare for a new career?
  • Do I need to finish classes I started previously?
  • Has my career or educational goal changed?

You don't need to have all the answers before you return. A Lemoore College counselor can help you review your academic progress, explore your options, create an educational plan, and choose courses that fit your goals.

Step 2: Review Your Academic Plan

If you've been away for several years, your previous plan may no longer reflect what you want to accomplish.

That's okay.

A counselor can help you look at your previous coursework and determine what you need moving forward. Counseling services include educational planning, course selection, degree and certificate requirements, placement and registration support, and referrals to additional campus resources.

Instead of trying to remember everything you took years ago, let a counselor help you put the pieces together.

Step 3: Figure Out Financial Aid

Returning to college may also mean revisiting how you'll pay for school.

Even if you received financial aid in the past, your situation may have changed. Lemoore College's Financial Aid Office can help you understand the steps for completing the FAFSA or California Dream Act Application and explore available financial aid options.

Lemoore College offers financial aid resources that may include grants, scholarships, loans, and other forms of assistance.

Step 4: Register for Your Classes

Once you've reviewed your educational plan, you're ready to start building your schedule.

Lemoore College provides registration assistance for students who need help navigating the student portal, searching for classes, understanding instructional options, or troubleshooting registration problems.

You don't have to remember how registration worked years ago. If the process looks unfamiliar, ask for help.

What If You're Nervous About Coming Back?
Feeling nervous doesn't mean you're not ready.

Returning to college after a long break can bring a lot of questions. You might worry that you're behind, that things have changed, or that everyone else will know what they're doing.

You don't have to compare your journey to anyone else's.

Start with one step.

You don't have to solve your entire college journey in one day.
