What Is Credit for Prior Learning?

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) allows students to earn college credit for learning gained outside of a traditional college classroom.

If your knowledge matches college-level course outcomes, that learning may count toward your certificate or degree path and help you move forward faster.

The college evaluates documentation and/or demonstrated knowledge to determine whether it meets college-level learning standards.

Ways You May Earn CPL

AP Exams

You may earn college credit based on qualifying AP exam scores of 3 or higher. Students must submit official transcripts from College Board. Examples include AP English, AP Calculus, and AP History.

CLEP Exams

CLEP exams allow students to demonstrate knowledge in subjects they already know. Students meeting required scores may receive college credit.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

Higher Level IB exams with qualifying scores may earn college credit. International credentials must be evaluated by an external agency.

Military Service and Training

Military experience and training may qualify through review of official military transcripts. We value the knowledge and leadership skills gained through military service.

Credit by Examination

In some courses, you may demonstrate mastery by taking a college-developed exam instead of completing the course.

Portfolio Assessment

Students may submit a portfolio showing evidence of college-level learning gained through work or life experience, including certifications, licenses, training records, work samples, and professional projects.

Articulated High School Courses

Eligible articulated high school coursework through dual enrollment may count for credit based on current college agreements and policies.

Important Things to Know

Before You Apply

CPL credit may not transfer to all colleges or universities. Meet with a counselor for transfer guidance.
Some CPL credit may not count toward financial aid or program eligibility.
CPL does not count toward residency requirements for graduation. Students must complete 12 units at WHCCD for degree eligibility.
Official documentation is required for review.
Availability of some CPL options depends on faculty review and course availability.
CPL unit limits vary by method and program. Review current catalog and district policy for current limits.
Once CPL credit is posted to your transcript, it cannot be reversed.
