National donut day is celebrated on the first Friday in June each year. While you never need a reason to celebrate delicious treats like donuts, there certainly is one. The start of national donut day goes all the way back to World War I.
The story goes that, on his first day of working on the Military Base, a military doctor purchased and handed out donuts to each solider he worked on, in an attempt to raise their spirits. A Lieutenant in receipt of one of those donuts loved the idea so much that, with help from the Salvation Army, began fundraising so the doctor could continue to provide donuts to his patients.
It was later determined that all soldiers, not just the wounded ones, could have their needs met by creating aid centers that would provide all sorts of amenities including – you guessed it – donuts. It was then that the Salvation Army sent volunteers to the frontlines in France to distribute care and comforting meals to those serving in the military.
Back home, “National Donut Day” was used to raise awareness about the war and raise funds for the Salvation Army.
How should you celebrate this tasty day? By treating yourself to your favorite donuts, of course! You could also raise funds for the Salvation Army, or another charitable group that works with our armed forces or volunteer your time.
Whether National Donut Day inspires you to support your local bakery, volunteer with a charity like the Salvation Army, or put on your apron and try your hands at making donuts, be sure to celebrate in a way that best represents you!
